Favourite Roads to Drive
We all have them; a ‘go to’ road for when you get the keys to that new car to test drive or the one where you just fancy a run and simply enjoy a particular route.
One of the great joys of driving in Ayrshire and indeed in Scotland is that you don’t have to travel too far to find a winding road with gorgeous scenery that lets you forget the ‘real world’ and just enjoy the moment in your chosen chariot.
This Weekends ‘Mail on Sunday’ carries an article concerning a route that markets itself as Scotlands Route 66 – The North Coast 500, which arguably the most famous trio of petrolheads in the TV world (Jeremy Clarkson, James May & Richard Hammond) tackled for the new series of their Amazon Prime show ‘The Grand Tour’.
Their reaction? The headline pretty much says it all. The North Coast 500 is the best drive in the world!
The NC500 is a 500 mile loop which starts and finishes in Inverness, snaking its way around the very northern coastline and via some historic sights and leisure interests such as golf courses, whisky tours, archaeology sites and more, was launched as tourism concept in 2015 and had quickly established itself as a ‘bucket list’ item for drivers and tourists alike.
